VASL goes to No 10!

VASL’s Community Champions attend No. 10 reception where Minister for Loneliness was announced

VASL’s Community Champions lead officer was invited by MP Neil O’Brien to No. 10 yesterday afternoon for the reception for the Jo Cox Loneliness Commission, where she met Rachel Reeves and Seema Kennedy the co-Chairs and Prime Minister Teresa May congratulated everyone working to tackle loneliness and said Jo Cox’s legacy would be honoured.

Community Champions is a VASL initiative that has Big Lottery backing for 5 years to help alleviate loneliness in Market Harborough district, matching volunteers to isolated people over 60 years old and at the moment has over 65 active relationships, regularly meeting up, taking people out to events and helping with their digital skills so that they can keep connected.

There was plenty of networking time over canapés and wine and Rohini talked to people from the NHS, WI, charities and MP offices and was able to tell people about VASL Community Champions and our joint working with Neil.

Rohini describes it as  “A truly inspirational event.  It was an honour for VASL’s work helping to alleviate loneliness in our community to be recognised on a national scale by this invitation”

Rohini is working closely with Neil in the future, as the problem of loneliness in our district is something he feels very strongly about tackling.
