Can You Volunteer Your Time In Your Community – With VASL? Posted on Monday, 23 March 2020
Support your community during Covid-19 and beyond to make a lasting difference
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with VASL and supporting people in our community during these difficult days.
We were almost overwhelmed with the number of offers of help that we received from people wanting to volunteer at the beginning of the pandemic. You are probably aware that there was an amazing response across the whole country and we know that local communities stepped up to help neighbours, and families and friends gave extra support, which meant that there was less demand for our help than we expected.
We still have a list of people who offered to help with shopping and prescriptions but the demand is very low and we have signposted some of them to other opportunities.
We hold a list of local community groups who are offering help, and we can direct you to your nearest group email us or ring 01858 468 499 to find out more. The information you submit may be shared with relevant organisations if they request volunteers.
At VASL we are looking for volunteers who can be with us for a longer term, loneliness is still a major problem and this is unlikely to change in the next few months.
We are recruiting people who can contact an older person in Harborough District by phone, letter or email through Community Champions and for people who will ring family carers across Leicestershire through Leicestershire Support for Carers.
There is information about these opportunities here.
Many people have found opportunities this last year to get to know the people in their own roads and villages and we would encourage you to continue to check on those who live alone or who are caring for a family member close by.
Thank you again for your interest, it is good to be part of such a caring community.
