Volunteers’ Week 2024 Posted on Monday, 3 June 2024

Each year at the beginning of June we pause to thank our volunteers for all that they do to make a difference.
We are celebrating with a cream tea on 5th June, when volunteers have the opportunity to meet people from other projects and to share experiences.
Thank you to all of our befrienders, drivers, trustees, admin, meeting hosts and digital volunteers who give some of their time each week.
This is what they say about volunteering with VASL.
(If you are inspired to become a volunteer, our opportunities are here)

It is easy to become a volunteer with VASL, as there is such a wide array of services to support. It means that volunteering with just one of them can fit seamlessly into your regular schedule. Personally, I’ve become a volunteer driver and a board member, both of which are roles that I find incredibly rewarding, and I am able to commit to around my regular working hours. Taking just a short time out of your week to help VASL is immensely rewarding and makes a significant difference in the community.

Lauren, Trustee and volunteer driver

I thoroughly enjoy my weekly visits to see Derek after work and they give me something to look forward to during the working day and week. I have been pleasantly surprised  about how much I get out of them and also for the time I am with him we can both chat about a wide variety of topics without any judgment, the conversation just flows. I can’t recommend volunteering as a community champion enough.

Will, Community Champions Volunteer

Volunteering has been a fantastic route for me to meet new people as well as giving me an opportunity, through my driving, to help folk get to essential medical appointments or simply get out and about for a day’s shopping.

Volunteering has given me the opportunity to practise my social skills and boost my own self confidence by giving me a sense of pride and identity in helping others.

Tony, Carers Dementia Guardian

“Since coming to Market Harborough in 2015, not knowing anybody, I have met so many lovely people as a VASL Transport  and Befriending Volunteer and learnt so much about our beautiful local area.
It is so flexible, enjoyable and rewarding being able to help others, and being part of the VASL family and community”
