Wellbeing Befriending Service Grows Posted on Friday, 4 August 2023
We are over the moon to have secured two years funding from the national lottery, which means our Wellbeing Befriending Service can continue to support adults across the Harborough District to improve their overall wellbeing. The additional funding will help the project continue with providing support over the phone as well as supporting people face to face too.
Our Wellbeing Befriending Service has been running at VASL since May 2021. The team is made up of experienced, approachable volunteers who make weekly phone calls to people who would like a chat and someone to listen. Over the two years we have recruited some truly amazing volunteers who have given up their time to support others across the Harborough district. Many people of all ages have received the support from the service, and people comment how much better they feel after talking to their volunteer. On the whole, we have seen people`s overall wellbeing improve, frequently people say they feel less isolated and more connected to their community.
- “My volunteer was there for me each week, she called me at the agreed time for a chat. She was very understanding and gave me space to talk about what was important to me. The service is professional and compassionate. I feel more confident to give things a go now, which I wouldn’t have felt without the support”.
Our new funding allows us to be flexible and provide support over the phone as well as face to face too. We are delighted to be adding additional options into the project, which includes monthly Wellbeing Workshops, and arranging for volunteers to support people to connect with community activities. Many people have told us If someone has wanted to join a group or activity in the area they live and felt the thought of going along is too overwhelming, we can support. We will match the person with a volunteer who will meet the individual beforehand and then go to the session together. Everyone is welcome to take part in our free monthly Wellbeing Workshops, initially being held in Market Harborough. Each session will have space for people to connect over complimentary refreshments and then learn more about a topic relating to the 5 ways to wellbeing, which may include managing stress, improving sleep patterns, diet and nutrition to name a few. (Details will be shared on our Facebook page soon). If you are interested in groups, 1-1 or telephone support and would like to find out more please call 01858 456042 or email firstname.lastname@example.org . We look forward to talking with you.
The sessions will be held at The Cube on Symingtons, St Mary’s Road, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, LE16 7DS, located at the end of the lane directly next to The Eco Village off St Mary’s Road.
