VASL Car Scheme during the pandemic

VASL Car Scheme during the pandemic

We were severely affected by the pandemic until 12 April 2021 when we we were able to offer some long distance health related journeys and trips for vaccinations. We have been able to offer more journeys as our drivers receive their second vaccinations and return to volunteering.  Details of the scheme are here.

These are photos record some of the activities which we have been involved with.

Five of our drivers who are under 70 are keeping themselves busy by delivering food parcels for Market Harborough’s Jubilee Foodbank, Monday to Friday.  They are enjoying getting out and about in Harborough District.

Our Transport staff are phoning vulnerable and isolated Car Scheme clients, everyone enjoys a good chat about what was on TV last night or recipes they have tried.

We are working with Harborough District Council, resolving problems for residents in Harborough district.
We have a comprehensive list with shops that will deliver and village community groups that will shop or pick up prescriptions.
Please get in touch if you need help with shopping or just want advice about what is available.

We are also keeping in touch with our volunteer drivers by phone and email.
When the weather was good we even had some social distanced outside catch ups, which we have all enjoyed, despite having to bring our own chairs and drinks.

The Transport team have held a sunflower growing competition with the volunteer drivers.
Seeds were posted out to the volunteers for them to grow, some of the volunteers were very competitive.
The winner received a cream tea for two, 2nd & 3rd prizes were boxes of biscuits.

The Transport team organized a Christmas Quiz for the volunteer drivers. Quiz sheets with 5 puzzles of varying complexity were dropped off (adhering to social distancing rules) with Christmas cards and a couple of small treats. There were three winners – prizes will be delivered when restrictions allow.

We have delivered activity bags to Car Scheme clients who are not online. You can find out more here
The bags contain a variety of things, jigsaw puzzles, word searches, games, a hyacinth bulb to grow, a heart stress ball and some edible treats.
The activity bags are to help people living alone who are not digitally connected to do practical activities to keep their brain supple and are also a visible reminder that older people are valued members of the local community.

We are grateful for the support of the National Lottery Community Fund and Morse Bags.
