WORKING TOGETHER TO END ISOLATION
Stronger together: How our community unites to support local residents.
Loneliness cannot be solved in a vacuum. To create a truly cohesive and resilient community across the Harborough District, the Community Champions project works proactively alongside national, regional, and local organisations. By sharing resources, building empathy across generations, and listening to our stakeholders, we ensure our project delivers a deeply impactful service.
Our project is guided by a dedicated Steering Group comprising active clients, volunteers, VASL staff, and vital community partners. Together, we meet three times a year to review our progress against our core aims, share invaluable local insights, and develop forward-thinking ways to tackle social isolation effectively.
OUR LOCAL NETWORK
Schools, Councils, & National Partners
We passionately encourage contact between people of different generations so they can learn from each other’s life experiences, foster deep empathy, and build community cohesion.
- Welland Park Academy: The academy has beautifully hosted multiple Community Gatherings for us. Students serve seasonal refreshments to our clients, sit and chat with them, and perform special concerts. As one client delightfully noted: “That was the best Community Gathering I have been to – when are we coming back here?”
- Robert Smyth Academy: We collaborate on an inspiring ‘Human Library Project’ where students can ‘borrow’ a project member to listen to their unique life story. Students also share hand-decorated postcards illustrating their hobbies, which our clients warmly reciprocate.
We work hand-in-hand with local authorities to pool resources and train our team to the highest standards:
- Leicestershire County Council: Members of Community Champions worked closely with Culture Leicestershire and Leicestershire Adult Learning to record memories for the Platinum Jubilee, and proactively co-developed the official Leicestershire Loneliness Toolkit.
- Harborough District Council: Sits directly on our Steering Group and provides vital Dementia Friends training to our volunteers and staff.
- Leicestershire Adult Learning Service: Delivers wonderful, sociable group learning sessions tailored for our clients and volunteers, covering topics like Sleep and Wellbeing, Assertiveness, and Effective Communication.
Our work is recognised both regionally and nationally, keeping us at the forefront of tackling isolation:
- National Recognition: We maintain close links with our local MP, a former Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Loneliness. In recognition of our impact, our Project Manager was invited to attend a prestigious Jo Cox Loneliness Reception at 10 Downing Street.
- Learning Networks: We actively engage with the National Academy of Social Prescribing and the National Lottery Community Fund to share learning, build best practices, and secure our ongoing project funding.
