VASL Car Scheme

VOLUNTARY COMMUNITY TRANSPORT ACROSS HARBOROUGH DISTRICT

Reliable door-to-door transport to keep you connected, independent, and moving.

The VASL Car Scheme provides vital community transport for elderly, disabled, or rurally isolated people living across the eastern side of the Harborough District (using the A5199 as our operational boundary). If you do not have a car of your own or find it difficult or impossible to access regular public transport, our scheme is here to help you get exactly where you need to be.

Supported by a fantastic bank of dedicated volunteer drivers using their own vehicles, we can take you to essential medical appointments at local health centres, dentists, and hospitals. We can also help you stay connected to your community by providing transport to the hairdressers, leisure centres, local social groups, or simply somewhere you would love to visit for the day.

HOW WE CAN HELP

Our Support Services

Our core transport service relies on a wonderful network of fully vetted volunteer drivers who use their own cars to get you safely to your destination.

  • Where We Can Take You: We provide door-to-door transport to health centres, hospital appointments, dentists, and hairdressers, as well as social outings to leisure centres or visiting friends.
  • Booking Notice: Please give us at least 5 working days’ notice before you wish to travel so we can match you with a driver. You can book up to 3 weeks in advance.
  • Prioritising Medical Trips: Because volunteer numbers are lower following the pandemic, we strictly prioritise medical and health-related appointments.
  • Passenger Contributions: We will ask you for a contribution towards your driver’s fuel expenses. The exact charge for your journey will be confirmed when you book so you know exactly what to pay.

We arrange fantastic, door-to-door social outings throughout the year using a hired, 15-seater community minibus.

  • Eligibility: To book onto any of our trips and excursions, you must first be registered as a member of the main VASL Car Scheme.
  • Comfort & Safety: To ensure plenty of space for shopping bags and walking aids, we limit each minibus trip to a maximum of 10 passengers. Seat belts must be worn at all times while the engine is running.
  • Independence: Passengers must be able to manage on their own during these bus trips.
  • Fair Booking Policy: Because these outings are incredibly popular, passengers are kindly asked to limit themselves to a maximum of 4 trips per seasonal booking block. If you wish to book more than 2 trips, please state your order of preference so we can ensure everyone secures a seat!

The car scheme is designed specifically for individuals who face genuine transport barriers.

  • Criteria: This service is available to elderly, disabled, or rurally isolated individuals who do not own a car and have no alternative access to public transport.
  • Our Boundary: Our operational area covers the Eastern side of the Harborough District, using the A5199 as our strict boundary line.
  • Escorts & Equipment: You are very welcome to bring an escort or a companion with you if you require extra support. Please let us know at the time of booking if someone is accompanying you, or if you need to bring a folding walking frame or a fold-up wheelchair. (Please note that on our minibus excursions, a maximum of 2 fold-up walkers are permitted per trip).

Proudly supported by Market Harborough and the Bowdens Charity, helping us fund vital transport links to change local lives for the better.

Partnered with Leicester City Council to ensure essential medical and community transport remains accessible to our residents.
