Volunteer with VASL

Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, make new friends and get out and about, whilst giving something back to the community. All our volunteering opportunities are designed to be fun and rewarding and we’ll give you all the help and support you need to get started and make the most of it. Have a look at what some of our VASL volunteers have to say and the impact that volunteering has.

We offer full training and support, taking the time to get to know you and exploring the skills and knowledge you bring to the role.

We were almost overwhelmed with the number of offers of help that we received from people wanting to volunteer at the beginning of the pandemic.
There was an amazing response across the whole country and we know that local communities stepped up to help neighbours and families gave extra support, which meant that there was less demand for our help than we expected. We are maintaining the list of people who offered to help with shopping and prescriptions but the demand is very low.

At the present time things are settling down and we are now looking for volunteers who can be with us for a longer term.

Support for Carers are looking for Telephone Befrienders

At Support for Carers we have a great team of volunteers who provide regular phone calls to the carers of Leicestershire, making a huge impact to carers daily.

We are looking for friendly, empathetic individuals who can volunteer their time with Support for Carers to make a real difference. Most volunteers commit to making calls one afternoon or one morning a week (no weekend calls are involved.)

Perhaps you look after a loved one yourself or have had experience in a caring role and therefore, understand carers’ situations. Maybe you want to get into something new and give back to your community. If so we would love to hear from you.

Please contact us if you would like to get involved or for more information

Community Champions

We are looking for volunteers who will make phone calls or email or write to older people who live alone in Harborough District.

Our volunteers get in touch once a week to share some news and to listen, it makes such a difference to someone who might not be able to get out of the house on their own.

We are looking forward to getting back to face to face meetings over the summer, but for now it has to be phone calls, letters and emails.

We will offer you training and support as you develop a relationship with your client.

If you want to know more about this, please get in touch.

Volunteer Drivers to assist the Foodbank

VASL volunteer drivers have been making deliveries on behalf of the Jubilee Foodbank in Market Harborough during the pandemic. We are recruiting additional drivers for these deliveries as the scheme is now also undertaking our normal journeys to hospital appointments and vaccinations.

Drivers are required weekday afternoons to deliver food to homes around the area. It involves lifting heavy bags of food and can take between one and three hours depending on the number of calls. You can commit to a regular weekly slot or fill in when needed.

Ideally volunteers will be based in Market Harborough which is where most of the deliveries will be, but 45p a mile is paid as expenses.

We will follow our normal volunteer recruitment policy and references will needed.

If you are interested, please contact the car scheme number 01858 468499 or email shandley@vasl.org.uk.
