Volunteer with VASL Car Scheme Posted on Monday, 18 July 2022

Our volunteer drivers provide transport for people who don’t have a car of their own or have difficulty using public transport. We take people to hospital appointments, vaccinations, dental appointments, to visit loved ones in nursing homes and to the leisure centre to name a few.

We operate in the eastern part of Harborough District and we are looking for more drivers, particularly people based in Fleckney, Kibworth, Great Glen or Market Harborough. Ideally you will be able to give us one day a week, but please talk to us about what you can offer. We pay expenses of 45p per mile and offer full training.

We asked some of our drivers how they found the role.

Not surprisingly I have found that my love of driving is well catered for driving for VASL, the tasks not only keep me in the driving seat but also bring me into contact with interesting people.

The jobs give structure to my week and “give me something to get up for”.

I have the satisfaction of knowing that with my driving I have been able to help people. Many times, I have been told that the VASL service is remarkable”.

“I gain considerable benefit from knowing that not only am I helping people who are perhaps not quite as active as myself but knowing how grateful they are for this help.  “Thank you, I’m so grateful” and “This is a wonderful service” are frequent comments made to me, and that is very gratifying”.

“Each job brings me in touch with some lovely people, some of them characters in their own right, sometimes sad but often amusing and always appreciative”.

The Car Scheme team are very supportive, and offer training, maps & directions and there is often cake available in the office!
